Caring for leather, parasols and a Christmas tree before winter
Contents
  1. Leather: clean first, then condition
  2. Parasol: cover, ventilate and dry
  3. Christmas tree: a breathable cover
  4. Mistakes to avoid
  5. Summary

Autumn is the right time to check what needs to get through the cold season, whether outdoors or in a garage. Leather sofas, garden parasols and Christmas trees do not need the same care, but they share one risk: moisture and poor storage damage them more than time does.

If you usually compare prices on Amazon.fr before buying, the same logic applies here: read the product page, check the dimensions and confirm what is included before you order. This guide covers three tasks: cleaning and protecting leather, covering and drying a parasol, and storing a Christmas tree in a suitable cover.

Leather: clean first, then condition

Before choosing a product, know what you are treating. A cleaner removes dust, grease and everyday dirt. A cream or conditioner feeds the leather and keeps it supple. These are not interchangeable. Clean first, condition second, and avoid thick layers that stay sticky or mark clothes.

Before using any product on a sofa or chair, test it on a hidden area, such as under a cushion or on the back of an armrest. Wait until it is fully dry before judging the result.

The type of leather matters too. Full-grain leather keeps the natural surface of the hide and tolerates nourishing care well, but it needs patience. Bonded or faux leather, common on entry-level sofas, has a surface coating. It should be cleaned with a gentle product and does not cope well with greasy products or strong solvents. Check the product page to see which material the kit suits.

A complete kit usually includes a cleaner, a cream or conditioner, and sponges. It is convenient for treating several pieces at once, as long as you follow the order of use and confirm that the products suit your material.

The same principles apply to car seats. Ventilate the cabin well, because leather that has not dried properly can hold moisture.

Parasol: cover, ventilate and dry

A parasol is rarely stored in good conditions. The most common problem is not rain but condensation. A parasol put away while still damp, under a closed cover, quickly develops stains and mould.

Before covering it, clean the canopy with clear water and mild soap, rinse, and let it dry completely with the canopy open in the air. Check the seams and the frame at the same time.

When choosing a cover, measure three things: the total height of the folded parasol, its diameter if the canopy is round or square, and above all the type of parasol. A cantilever parasol, with the pole at the side, is not covered in the same way as a central one. Make sure the cover states compatibility with that type and matches the real length of the folded canopy, so the seams are not forced.

Useful criteria include a waterproof fabric with UV protection and vents that limit condensation. A cover without ventilation, even a waterproof one, can trap moisture that forms inside.

Store the parasol somewhere dry and ventilated, not against a damp wall or in a closed shed without air circulation.

Christmas tree: a breathable cover

A tree is a special case. It is often put away after the holidays and may stay for months in an attic or cellar. A thick plastic bag looks practical, but it traps humidity and encourages mould if the tree is not perfectly dry.

A breathable non-woven cover lets air through and protects against dust without sealing in moisture. It is the most common format for storage.

Measure the height of your tree once it is dismantled or folded, and compare it with the dimensions listed. A cover that is too small may tear. A cover that is too large lets the tree move around, which can damage the branches.

Keep the cover away from damp, on a shelf or pallet rather than against a wall.

Mistakes to avoid

A few errors come up often:

  • storing a parasol or tree that is still damp;
  • using a very greasy product on thin or bonded leather;
  • buying a cover without checking its exact type;
  • relying on a single photo instead of reading the description and dimensions;
  • choosing a third-party seller without checking the return conditions, the warranty and the delivery costs.

On Amazon.fr, as on other European marketplaces, the seller and delivery terms can differ between offers for the same product. Take time to compare them before you confirm.

Summary

Before winter: clean leather before conditioning it, dry the parasol fully before covering it, and store the tree in a breathable non-woven cover. Good habits matter more than the most expensive product. Read the product pages, check compatibility, and keep your items somewhere dry and ventilated.
